LADY BELGA

In a series of fictional fantasy-fashion photo montages, alter ego Lady Belga, physically photographed in the Netherlands, makes an artificial trip through Belgium, her country of origin.

Through the guise of Lady Belga, Wanda Tuerlinckx traces her foot steps in search of her own identity which has been eclipsed from Belgium, a state that struggles with its identity by being separated by language and social geography. A quest to find her roots and an attempt to understand and rediscover the divided country in the center of Europe.  

Wanda’s occupancy within the frame is challenging the viewer to make sense of the narrative by engaging with the iconic figurative style which she assumes in each of the images. In the photo collages she shows and tries to unify the two worlds she lives in. 

There are many references to femininity, fashion, and a feeling of lost innocence.  A revisiting of scenes past, now glimpsed again with a certain reverence and resignation of a life lived.

The Lady Belga series is an irreversible one way journey through the past to find answers in her alienated and schizophrenic world. A passionate and ironic scream for attention, recognition and individuality as she traverses through the otherness existing in Belgian society.

Wanda Tuerlinckx, is born in Belgium and is living in the Netherlands since 1990.
